Chapter 7

It starts innocently, as bad ideas often do. I was trying to find a bird video for Shaun, because it cracks me up to see him chattering at the screen and looking behind my laptop to find the birds. But YouTube remembered that I’d watched a Damage Control video—at least a month ago, I swear!—and that column of recommended videos has one labeled “Sean’s a Grumpy Boots.” And I click. I know I shouldn’t, but I click. And suddenly I’m cyber-stalking.

Turns out Katie McCann has a vlog. I wonder how many of my friends knew and have been not telling me. There are dozens of videos with titles like “Katie and Sean Have Lunch” and “Time for New Shoes!” and “Holiday in Bath.” Dozens. At least one a week for god knows how long. “Sean’s a Grumpy Boots” opens on Katie’s smile. She was a Disney channel star, so that smile is straight and white and sweet. Soooo sweet.

“Hey Shatie fans!” Shatie? Oh right, Sean and Katie. Of course. Yuck. She holds a dog up to the camera. It’s one of those weird ones that’s hairless except for a puff of hair on its head, tail, and feet. It looks like a demon. “Say hi to everyone, Iggy!” She waves the dog’s paw. It licks its nose and looks away from the camera.

“It’s super cold in London!” I look at the release date—January 16, about a month ago. Then I see the number of views—522,987. Subscribers to her channel? Just over two million. Million. Two of them. “Iggy needs a sweater and I think Sean should come shopping with us. Don’t you, Iggy? Daddy needs to help!”

My stomach clenches into a tight ball. Daddy. Shaun jumps up into my lap and starts to purr. I stroke him absent-mindedly while on-screen, Katie walks up to a closed door and knocks on it. I hear a voice I remember well say “Yeah?” and she opens the door. Sean is in a chair, holding a guitar. His green-haired head looks up from the instrument and smiles. It’s not a real smile, I tell myself, it’s not in his eyes.

“It’s time to go shopping for an Iggy Sweater!” Katie says brightly and Sean shakes his head. “A proper dog doesn’t need a sweater,” he says and Katie puts her hand on her narrow hip. The video goes on, with Katie pretending to talk through the dog and Sean refusing to budge until he finally sighs, sets down his guitar and follows them. Katie flashes a triumphant smile before turning off the camera. I make the mistake of scrolling to the comments and, among the usual nasty comments from people who hate everything except leaving YouTube comments, the fans seem to break down into people who think Sean is an grouch and Katie deserves better, those who think Katie is a dingbat and Sean deserves better, and those who think that Shatie is the best thing to have happened to the planet Earth. These three groups hate one another.
